What's going on with us lately...
Hi everyone! Feel like there's been a bit of a lack in blog posts lately and just content in general, and there's a very good reason for that. Anyone who follows my insta will already know a bit about what's been happing in my life lately (and if you're not, you should be as you'll find out things first hand over there!) but I thought I'd write a chatty blog post and have a little catch up I guess! So, without further ado, here's some of the things that are going on in my life right now...
We got a house!
Finally! After living back at home with my parents for a full on year, we finally have our own place again. To cut a long story short, I couldn't afford to privately rent (it's extortionate) a house all on my own and so when we got handed our notice for our old private rented house, I immediately applied to my local council for housing. I never heard from them and 8 long months later, they finally put me on the housing register. I then started applying for houses in my area (although there wasn't many, it was so hard) and weeks went by and nothing. I started to realise they had me in the wrong banding as based on their criteria, I should have been at the very top, living at my parents - 7 of us crammed into a 3 bed house, and Reuben having no space of his own. I got onto them and they soon moved me to the top, something that should have happened in the first place, but I won't moan about it now as it's all panned out! About a month ago, I started getting phone calls about houses that I'd applied for, I got 3 in one week - the first two never worked out, one was too far away and one I wasn't eligible for even though it was only 20 minutes away from my parents. Anyway, I got asked to view this new build in York, and I was told not to get my hopes up; so I didn't, after having very little hope for so many months... and I was essentially told at the viewing that it was mine. I rang my mum like absolutely ecstatic because I just didn't expect it at all. The house was absolutely gorgeous, it was the perfect little 2 bed for us to make into our first home, and only an hour later, I received a phone call to say I could have it and get the keys the next Monday. Insane.
Basically, it's all been crazy hectic ever since then! I am so fortunate to have been given a new build, I know that. It's not free, I still pay a substantial amount of rent by myself, but it's far less costly than private rent, and we have the security of knowing it's ours forever if we want it to be. At the moment it's still a massive work in progress because the floors all need doing, minus the kitchen and bathroom, and the lounge which has already been done just before we moved in. But it's slowly coming together and it's just so surreal, like actually having a home that's ours. I may not own it, but being with a housing association means that as long as I keep paying my rent, it's mine forever if I want it, so it's as good as, you know? It's amazing what these schemes can do for people in my situation and I can't believe anyone has a bad word to say about them. I've been documenting some of the house process over on a new Instagram account called littlebeckhouse so you can head over to that page and drop it a follow if you're interested!
Getting into YouTube.
As some of you may know, I recently got back into YouTube, I started vlogging a bit and now I'm really enjoying it and getting into it more so I've invested in a better vlogging camera to post more regularly! It is hard to post regularly on YouTube as well as my blog and Instagram but I'm trying to find a groove to keep up with it all, I think having my own place again is definitely helping. Reuben is also off for summer at the moment so once he goes back to nursery and I have that free time again, that will help too! I'm preferring YouTube for creating more laid back videos this time, things like daily vlogs, maybe some home hauls, my daily makeup routine, that kind of thing! I used to think to be successful on YouTube, you had to have all the fancy gear and lighting and this time round I'm just not about that kind of content. I watch my old videos and think I look and sound so awkward and not myself, and daily vlogs and other laid back videos comes much more naturally to me. I'm not bothered about being 'successful' on YouTube either, I'm doing it because I enjoy it and I like to look back on the memories of Ru at certain ages. So if you fancy following me along this journey, you can find my channel here!
Other than that, like I said above, I'm just trying to find my groove with the new house and everything. I'm loving posting interior bits and homey things over on my insta stories, it's something I've always had a love for! I'm still hoping to start doing more freelance photography too, I've got a shoot booked in for this weekend and I'm so nervous but it's going to be an amazing experience. I need to add to my portfolio and then hopefully I can actually start advertising myself properly.
What have you all got planned for the rest of Summer?
